Wireless Internet Router
Your household contains two desktop computers and three laptops. Only one of the desktops is connected to
the Internet so competition for access within the family is fierce. Once upon a time your only option was to
run "hard wire" connections for every computer in the house. But times have changed. Now a Wireless
internet Router will allow you to have every computer you have share a single Internet connection. You should be
aware that a Wireless Internet Router is not really completely wireless. It will need to be plugged into your
High Speed Internet connection. Once that's done, you simply add the other desktops and laptops in your
household to the network and everybody can share that single Internet connection without additional wired
connections.
Not all Wireless Internet Routers are created equal so you'll need to do some research before you buy. One
variable that many consumers look to as a differentiating factor is speed. Routers are advertised as
transferring data in maegabits per second (Mbps) so some buyers are enticed into paying more for a Wireless
Internet Router with the highest speed rating they can find. But those advertised speeds are achieved under
ideal operating conditions. Anyone who has a broadband Internet connection knows that it is a shared
connection. Webpages load slower at peak times of the day. No Wireless Internet Router can compensate
for that. However, it does makes sense to pay more for new technology that enhances the way data is
transferred. Today the newest class of routers are the "N" class which are replacing the older "G"
class. The technical details of how this is done are pretty complex but what this means is that on average
"N" class routers will deliver higher transfer speeds than "G" class routers.
Two other variables to consider are warranties and customer service. Most of the top manufacturers offer
similar warranties but there are differences. And no warranty is worth anything if a manufacturer doesn't
have the customer service to back it up. Find as many customer reviews as you can that describe how well the
manufacturer deals with customer issues.
If you're a relative novice you might want to stick with the top manufacturers of Wireless Internet Routers,
like NetGear, TrendNet, LinkSys, or Belkin. Because of their popularity it is easier to find expert and
customer reviews of the different models they offer. In addition, many experts feel you get better overall
performance if you stick with wireless components from the same manufacturer. So if you think you'll be
adding a wireless video game console adapter it would make sense to buy your Wireless Internet Router from a
company that also offers wireless game adapters.
Purchasing a Wirless Internet Router over the Internet usually leads to the best deal you can get in terms of
price. But if you need a lot of advice, don't overlook local retail locations as a buying source.
